Brady the Book Sailor Meets the StoryVores

Screen Shot 2017-12-10 at 4.27.40 PMThe second installment of the Brady the Book Sailor series…

Brady was a super awesome kindergartener who lived with his Mommy and Daddy and his dog Bailey. He was really good at reading and technology – and he also had a secret.

You see, Brady was a Book Sailor. With his Magic Purple Library Card, he could close his eyes, and imagine himself into the story from any book that he had ever read. One of Brady’s favorite things to do was to pick up his friend GrapeB the friendly pirate, and travel to the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. GrapeB had a beard that was made entirely out of grapes. And when he dipped his beard into Willy Wonka’s chocolate river, his beard turned into chocolate-covered grapes! Brady and GrapeB found this out by accident, but when Brady told Willy Wonka about the chocolate covered grapes, Mr. Wonka loved the idea and he started selling chocolate covered grapes in addition to his regular sales of Wonka Bars, Scrumdiddlyumptious Bars, and Everlasting Gobstoppers.

One day, Brady was at the library with General Mommy to look for some more fun books to read. On one of the tables, he saw a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory book lying open. Next to the book were five tiny figures, about three inches high. It looked like a family playset: there was a mommy and a daddy and a boy and a girl and a dog. They were rolling around on the table clutching their tummies.

“Oooooooh, I am SO FULL,” the little girl.

“I know, me too,” said the little boy.” But I really wanted to find out if they turned Violet
Beauregard back to normal after she ate the gum.”

Brady got down on his knees, so that he was eye level with the tiny family. “Hello,” he said. “Are you all OK?”

“Mommy! Daddy! That little boy can see us!” said the little girl.

“Oh, said the tiny Mommy. “He must be a Book Sailor, because we’re invisible to everyone else.”

“Yes,” said Brady, I’m a Book Sailor. How come you all have tummy aches?

“Well,” said the tiny Daddy, “We are StoryVores.” Our brains are in our tummies, so we read books to get full instead of eating food. But if we read too much, we get a tummy ache.”

“Oh, well I’m glad I’m not a StoryVore, because it means I can read as much as I want without getting a tummy ache! Plus, pizza and grapes and ice cream and chicken nuggets are really yummy.”

“I’ve never tasted chicken nuggets,” said the little boy. “You sure are lucky to be able to read as much as you want whenever you want. But the cool thing about being a StoryVore is that you get to live in the library and read whatever book that you want for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, and snacks.”

Brady and General Mommy introduced themselves, and so did the family. The Daddy’s name was Milne. The Mommy’s name was Diana. The little boy’s name was Pilkey, and the little girl’s name was Padme. The doggie’s name was Esteban the Magnificent. (Pilkey and Padme loved Drew Daywalt’s crayon stories, so they named the dog after one of the crayons).

Hey, said Pilkey, “did you hear that they changed the rules for Magic Purple Library Cards?”

“No,” said Brady. “What is different?”

“Well,” said the little boy, since you can check out DVDs from the library, you can now use your Magic Purple Library Card to jump into stories from your favorite DVDs as well as your favorite books.

“Whoa, that is super cool,” Brady said. “Thanks for letting me know!”

“You’re welcome,” said the little boy. “Come back and see us sometime. We’re always here at the library.”

“I sure will,” said Brady. “See you later!”

When Brady and General Mommy got back home, he decided to test out his Magic Purple Library Card. First, he went to pick up his friend GrapeB and told him that now they could go to stories from DVDs, too. At first, Brady thought it would be cool to visit the LEGO Batman movie. But then he remembered that the LEGO Batman DVD didn’t come out for two more months, so they decided to visit Despicable Me.

They grabbed the Magic Purple Library Card, and Brady imagined going into the DVD of Despicable Me. When they opened their eyes, they were in the middle of a bunch of tiny yellow figures.

“Bello! Brady! Bello! Brady!” The figures all chanted.

“Hi Minions! Hi Stuart! Hi Kevin! Hi Bob! This is my friend, GrapeB! GrapeB, these are the Minions!”

“Bello! Banana! Bello! Banana!” the minions all chanted.

Suddenly, Brady noticed that a bunch of the minions were fighting over a banana. Which wouldn’t have been a big problem – except that they were fighting right next to the rocket launcher!

“Why are they fighting over a banana?” GrapeB asked.

“It’s kind of a long story,” said Brady. “Hey, you guys,” Brady, said, “be careful! If you accidentally punch the red rocket launcher button, the rocket will launch and blow through the ceiling!”

Just then Stuart jumped over Kevin, who was holding the banana over his head. Stuart tried to grab the banana, but missed, and fell right on the red rocket launcher button! Suddenly, a voice started to count down: “Ten…nine…eight…seven…”

“Yikes!” Brady said. “Quick, GrapeB, grab the Magic Purple Library Card, so we can get out of here before the rocket launches!”

They grabbed the Magic Purple Library Card, and closed their eyes. Brady decided to visit Toy Story next, so he concentrated really hard on the Toy Story DVD.

When Brady and GrapeB, opened their eyes, they were in the middle of Andy’s bedroom! Sheriff Woody and Buzz Lightyear and Jessie started to introduce themselves, but Brady explained that he already knew their names. Brady told them he was a Book Sailor and introduced himself and GrapeB.

Buzz Lightyear asked Brady about his favorite movies, and Brady said that he loved the Toy Story movies and also Despicable Me and LEGO Batman and Star Wars. “Buzz, you would really like Star Wars,” Brady said. “It’s about stuff that happened a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away! It has spaceships and aliens and everything!”

Buzz was very interested in Star Wars, so Brady told him the entire story from A New Hope. Buzz Lightyear had lots of questions, including whether the characters all took baths after they went down the garbage chute.

“Well, not for a while,” Brady said, “because they were trying to escape!”

“Eeeeewwwwww,” said Woody. “I’ll bet they smelled yucky. We all got put in a dump truck in Toy Story 2, and it was awful!” The rest of the toys agreed.

Brady and GrapeB talked for a while longer with Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Jessie, and all the other toys, including Slinky Dog and Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head.

Then Brady said it was time for him to go, because he wanted to use the Magic Purple Library Card to visit Star Wars before his Auntie Kimberly came to pick him up to have dinner at Peter Piper Pizza.

Brady and GrapeB grabbed on to the Magic Purple Library Card. “Hey!” Said Buzz Lightyear. “It would be great if you could take me to visit Star Wars, too!”

“Gosh,” said Brady, “I’m not sure if the Magic Purple Library Card can take three people. Maybe I could come back for you another time.”

Brady and GrapeB closed their eyes. So they didn’t see Buzz Lightyear grab for the Magic Purple Library Card! Just then, Woody jumped on Buzz, piggyback style, to try to pull him away from the card. But it was too late.

They were already in the Star Wars DVD.

Do you think they landed in the Cantina? Or on Tattooine? Or in the Millenium Falcon?

Nooooooooooo. They were on the Death Star, IN THE GARBAGE COMPACTOR!

“Uh, oh,” said Buzz. I guess that was me. But I was thinking that I did NOT want to land in the garbage compactor!”

“That’s not how the Magic Purple Library Card works,” Brady says. If you get an image in your mind, the Magic Purple Library Card doesn’t understand that you DON’T want to go there! It thinks that’s where you DO want to be! So you should only think about where you DO want to go!”

“Sorry,” said Buzz. “But hey, at least now you know that you can take three extra people with you when you use your Magic Purple Library Card!”

Suddenly, Woody, yelled out, “HELP! SOME BIG SLIMY THING HAS MY FOOT!!!!” The thing was starting to pull Woody under all the garbage!

Brady and Buzz each grabbed one of Woody’s arms, and they pulled and pulled. Finally, he was free of the slimy thing.

“My Boot!” yelled Woody. “My boot came off!!!”

Suddenly, Woody’s boot flew straight up in the air.

From deep underneath all the garbage, they could hear the slimy thing saying, “Blech! What was that?? That is the yuckiest thing I ever tasted!”

Brady caught the boot as it fell back down.

“Nice catch!” Woody said.

Brady gave Woody back his boot. “Peeee-yewww, this boot smells a million times worse than Stinky Pete.”

“Oh, no, it’s filled with garbage and monster slobber, so I can’t put it back on. I’ll have to carry it until we get back to Andy’s room.”

Just then, they heard a man say, “I’ve got a bad feeling about this.” They looked over at the man – and he looked at Brady, GrapeB, Woody, and Buzz. “Who are YOU?” he asked. There was another man there, plus a woman with cinnamon bun hair, and a giant brown furry person.

Brady introduced himself and explained that he was a Book Sailor, but now he could travel into DVDs. The man introduced himself and said that his name was Han Solo.

“Oh, I know who you all are,” said Brady. I’ve visited you in the LEGO Star Wars books, and I’ve watched your movies tons of times.”

“I thought you looked kind of familiar,” said the lady with the cinnamon bun hair.

Brady said that he needed to get his friends back home, but that he would come back to visit Star Wars soon.

“Except not the garbage compactor,” Brady said. “I’ll come back during the part where you are all getting medals. “Luke, you should contact C-3PO and R2-D2 and tell him to shut down the garbage compactor, so you can get out.”

“Great idea,” said Luke.

“Medals?” Han Solo asked. “How come we get medals?”

“It’s kind of a long story,” Brady said. “Everybody, hang on to the Magic Purple Library Card, and concentrate on Andy’s bedroom!”

But when they opened their eyes, they were standing at the side of the chocolate river at Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory!

“Oh, no!” said Brady. We were supposed to think about Andy’s room! Who was thinking about the Chocolate Factory?”

“Uh, oh,” said GrapeB. “I was just thinking about making some chocolate covered grapes! Sorry about that!”

“That’s OK,” said Brady, “but we all really have to concentrate this time. I need to drop Buzz and Woody off, then take you back to the Island, and then get back to my own bedroom so I can go to Peter Piper Pizza with Auntie Kimberly tonight!”

They all grabbed on to the card and concentrated really hard on Andy’s room. When they all opened their eyes, they were in Andy’s room!

“See you later, Buzz and Woody,” Brady said.

“To Infinity and Beyond!” said Buzz.

“You’re My Favorite Deputy!” said Woody.

Brady used the Magic Purple Library Card to take GrapeB back to his Island, and then he returned to his own bedroom.

That night, Brady and Auntie Kimberly went to Peter Piper Pizza for dinner. They had a great time eating yummy pizza and playing all the games, like the one where you get to squirt duckies with water! Brady won loads of tickets and picked out a Peter Piper Pizza guy and some funny sunglasses as his prizes!

When Auntie Kimberly dropped Brady off at home, Brady’s Daddy and General Mommy met them at the door. Mommy had a confused look on her face.

“Brady,” she said, “Did you pick up all your toys before you left to go to Peter Piper Pizza?”

“Yes,” said Brady, “they were all in the toybox.”

“Well,” said General Mommy, “come into your bedroom and see what happened.”

When Brady and Auntie Kimberly and General Mommy walked into Brady’s room, they could see that every single one of Brady’s stuffed animals were all over the floor! His stuffed Woody was on the floor, and Buzz Lightyear, and Slinky Dog, and Cookie Monster, and Super Bear, and Little Bear, and Big Bird, and Mr. Snuffleupagus, and all of his Funkos!

“That is really weird,” said Auntie Kimberly.

“We’d better put them all away,” said General Mommy.

“Wait,” said Brady, as Auntie Kimberly reached down to pick up Mr. Snuffleupagus. “I think they are trying to spell something!”

Brady and General Mommy and Auntie Kimberly looked closely, and sure enough, the toys were arranged to spell letters!

“Oh, no,” said Brady. “Woody must have dropped his boot at the Chocolate Factory! He must have contacted MY Woody and all the other toys to leave me a message! Even though they didn’t spell all the words right, I think I understand what they mean! I’ll be right back!”

Brady picked up his magic purple library card, and concentrated really hard on Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory! If General Mommy and Auntie Kimberly hadn’t known that Brady was a Book Sailor, they would have been super surprised to see him completely disappear!

When Brady opened his eyes, he was by the Chocolate River. But there were policemen all over the Chocolate Factory! A barrier with yellow tape had been constructed around the river. One of the policemen was talking to Willy Wonka. When Willy Wonka saw Brady, he said, “The Oompa Loompas found a stinky boot by the river! We think it might belong to my competitor, Mr. Slugworth! He must be trying to break into the Factory to steal my secret recipes!”

“Gosh, I’m sorry,” said Brady. That boot actually belongs to my friend, Woody. He dropped it here. If you’ll give me the boot, I’ll take it back to him.”

“But, Brady, why did your friend fill up his boot with garbage?” Mr. Wonka asked.

“It’s kind of a long story,” said Brady.

“OK, here you go,” said Willy Wonka, as he handed over the boot. “But you’ll have to hold your nose, because the boot is super stinky! Come back sometime with your friend GrapeB! We are almost out of chocolate-covered grapes, and they’ve become one of my best-selling treats!”

“Thanks, Mr. Wonka,” said Brady, as he took the boot. “We’ll come back soon!” Brady sounded kind of funny because he was holding his nose while he was talking.

Brady tucked the boot under one arm, as he held his nose with one hand and held on to his Magic Purple Library Card with the other. He concentrated really hard on Andy’s room. When he opened his eyes, he was there! Buzz and Woody and Jessie were all gathered around him.

“Thank goodness,” said Woody. “I didn’t know if you would get my message!”

Brady handed Woody the stinky boot, and all of the toys clapped and cheered.

Brady used his Magic Purple Library Card to go back to his bedroom. He had had quite an adventure that day!

The next time Brady went to the library, he stopped by to thank the StoryVores for letting him know that he could travel to DVDs with his magic purple library card.

“What kind of adventures did you have?” Pilkey asked. Brady said, “It’s kind of a long story.”

“Uh, oh”, said Pilkey. “You’d better save it for another day, then, because we just read our lunch and our tummies are super full!”

They all laughed and laughed and laughed.

Brady read
more books
and watched lots more DVDs
and lived happily every after.

The End.
